The Importance of Creativity, Connection, and Human Spirit
During war or evil, when bombs fall and darkness spreads, it may seem that art and spirit are luxuries. Yet, it is precisely in these moments of destruction, that the human spirit needs to burn brightest.
I'm penning this on December 10th, 2025. At this point in writing, there’s a lot going on in the world.
Russia invaded, and are at war with Ukraine. Gaza is being bombed, Israel and Palestine in conflict. Sudan and Congo are suffering genocides. North Korea is under intense regime. Afghanistan, although US troops were pulled, returned back to authoritarian regime and sunk straight back to how it was pre-2001. Iran is dictated by strong Islamic regime with zero women’s rights. President Trump is in his second term of the USA, building what looks horrendous for the history books: ICE raids, Alligator Alcatraz, “Make America Great Again”. These just scratch the surface.
Around the world, there’s still existence of starvation and hunger, sex trafficking, human trafficking, rape, racism, child marriages, slavery, sexism, discrimination, violence, hurt... it’s extremely hard to ignore.
The Human Spirit Must Prevail
I progressively became more lethargic with the weight of caring for news. Shockingly, that comes from someone with a Journalism degree. (I’ll get more into that in future Substacks, I promise). In desperation, helplessness, and hopelessness, I happened to come across a useful quote from Winston Churchill:
“If we lose the capacity to create art, to enjoy music, or to celebrate beauty in the midst of war, then the enemy has truly won.
Our spirit is our greatest weapon, and it must be nurtured with songs, stories, and paintings that speak of hope, courage, and endurance.”
It was so profound, I had to read it multiple times to make sure it absorbed properly.
Of course we should turn inwards, to the goodness in ourselves and continue carving paths with intention. Of course we shouldn't give up on happiness, or the commitment we have to our human desires. Of course we shouldn’t lose ourselves in the midst of external chaos, discernment, disruption, difficulties, or loss. What a much greater loss that would be.
Human Art, Connection, and Creativity Must Prosper
The artist’s brush, the poet’s pen, and the musician’s song become beacons of life and hope. Finding joy in little things, trivial things — these are the foundations that keep great strength in the tapestry of humanity. We must refuse to extinguish our creative spirit. We must endeavour to create, and connect, even in the most perilous of times. Especially, in the most perilous of times.
Creativity is our lifeline, a testament that even in chaos — humanity, spirit, and soul will endure.
It’s with this notion that I both encourage and implore you: create. Find your joy and hope, and when you do, never let go of it. Bare your soul, stay rooted in your curiosity and desire, continue to deepen your humanity. Carve your intended path fearlessly. You owe it to yourself, and the world. It’s the one true light among the darkness, and it all comes down to you.
Keep carving your pathway, fearlessly, and with ferocity.
